ABOUT THE MUSEUM

Park Eul-bok Embroidery Museum

Located at the foot of Baegundae Peak in Bukhansan Mountain, the Park Eul-bok Embroidery Museum opened on May 25, 2002. It was established to honor the achievements of Master Park Eul-bok (1915–2015), who contributed to the development of modern Korean embroidery by integrating the trends of traditional embroidery with modern and contemporary painting, while also contributing to various cultural and artistic fields. By exhibiting approximately 40 of the Master's works, the museum offers the public an opportunity to appreciate embroidery that was previously difficult to view, providing a chance for cultural enjoyment. It also reorganizes the history of modern and contemporary Korean embroidery. Furthermore, through various programs, the museum is expected to serve as a venue for traditional culture education for the public and as a space for cultural and artistic experiences.

The First Special Exhibition Hall on the first floor of the museum hosts spring and autumn special exhibitions, featuring diverse themes across the entire field of art. The Second Permanent Exhibition Hall on the second floor features a permanent exhibition of works by Park Eul-bok. Additionally, the space is utilized for citizens by conducting various educational programs.

The building is a residence designed in 1967 by architect Jeong In-guk (1916–1975, who served as Dean of the School of Architecture at Hongik University and President of the Korean Institute of Architects). It was converted into a museum through remodeling work by Jeong Myeong-won, also an architect (son of architect Jeong In-guk and professor of architecture at Hongik University).

ABOUT THE MUSEUM PEOPLE

Director Oh Sun-hee

A leading figure in the world of textile art, Director Oh Sun-hee has carried forward the artistic legacy of her mother, the renowned artist Park Eulbok, while cultivating a creative world entirely her own. Beginning her studies at Ewha Womans University and continuing her education in the United States and France, she cultivated a truly global artistic sensibility. Through numerous solo and invitational exhibitions on international stages such as New York and Paris, she has helped elevate the standing of Korean textile art on the world stage.

Throughout her career, Director Oh has been active across many facets of the field. She has demonstrated exceptional artistic skill, receiving accolades that include awards from the Indianapolis Museum and the Korean Craft Artists Association, and her works have been included in the collection of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea—leaving a distinct mark on the history of contemporary craft. Having served as Dean of the Graduate School at Duksung Women's University, further deepening her academic expertise, Director Oh has led the museum since 2002, dedicating herself to uncovering the contemporary value of embroidery. Carrying forward the artistic spirit passed down through generations, she continues to foster a beautiful dialogue that bridges tradition and modernity.

Director Oh Young-ho

Director Oh Young-ho, a key founding figure of the Park Eulbok Embroidery Museum, serves as the foundation's overall director, responsible for systematically preserving and advancing the great artistic legacy of his mother, Park Eul-bok.

As Park Eul-bok's son and, alongside Director Oh Sun-hee, a central pillar of this artistic family spanning generations, he laid the foundational structure of the museum as its inaugural Chairman, guiding the museum's long-term vision and management direction. With family connections extending to leading figures across Korea's cultural and artistic world—including Honorary Professor Joo Jin-sook (former Director of the Korean Film Archive)—he serves as a steadfast pillar supporting the museum's cultural depth and authenticity.

Chairman Oh Young-ho also serves as Co-Director in media engagements and major special exhibitions, personally overseeing the museum's day-to-day operations and events both large and small. As a manager and planner dedicated to creating a stable operating environment where artists can devote themselves fully to their creative work and exhibitions, he works to bring the cultural and historical value of embroidery art to the public, serving as a beautiful bridge connecting tradition and the future.

Curator Park Gyeol-i

The Curator of the Park Eulbok Embroidery Museum brings a rich, multidisciplinary perspective spanning the arts—as an actor, a Ph.D. in Film Studies, and a professor teaching theater, film, and musical theater at the university level.

At the museum, the role of curator extends well beyond simple exhibition management, serving a pivotal function in researching the museum's collection and special exhibitions and connecting them with the public.

In particular, she stands at the center of efforts to deeply understand the authenticity of embroidery art and reinterpret it through contemporary cultural content and educational programs. Her sensibility as an actor—honed through portraying human life on screen and stage—brings a distinctive power that elevates the museum's exhibition spaces into a living stage for storytelling.

Her educational expertise, built through her roles as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Theater and Film at Kyung Hee University and Visiting Professor of Musical Theater at Myongji University, further enriches and professionalizes the museum's cultural and arts education programs. This distinctive career—spanning theory and practice, stage and lecture hall—serves as a powerful driving force enabling the Park Eulbok Embroidery Museum to preserve the value of traditional embroidery while continuously engaging with contemporary audiences.
